Socialism – Put Up, Shut Up & Pay Up
History is made and is written within windows of time, quite often this history is repeated as memories fail and learnings are ignored. The last UK general election was held in July 2024, it resulted in the UK ushering in a Socialist Labour government, the first since 2010. Within weeks of being elected taxes were raised to pay for increased government spending, and as usual the beneficiaries are the unionised public sector workers, welfare dependents and other government bodies. The re-nationalisation of the old socialist steel and rail industries by adding them to the teat of the taxpayer, makes this moment in history feel very much like a replay of the 1970’s. Let’s hope that its doesn’t play out entirely like the 1970’s, and we don’t have to go begging to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bail out like Labour’s James Callaghan did in 1976.
Although it’s early days for this latest iteration of socialism, things aren’t looking good. The UK’s finances are at breaking point, the high cost of living, and the continued impact on our social cohesion due to uncontrolled immigration are widening the fractures within our society. We are told we will grow our way out of the mess, this is a little optimistic. No society in history has taxed itself into prosperity, and only thing that seems to be growing at this time is the amount of tax that is being collected. The fact is, trying to tax yourself into prosperity is like standing on your hands and trying to lift yourself up, it’s impossible. Furthermore, any bid to grow the economy is normally driven by a vibrant private sector, but this time that is unlikely to be the case. Over the last 50 years consecutive UK government policies have ensured that the UK’s manufacturing base has been decimated, to rectify this will be no easy fix. A constraining regulatory framework, and the high costs of doing business in the UK will see to that. In addition to this, the immigration crisis is unlikely to be resolved by a socialist leadership, who believe in the rights and entitlement of all humans, and who are led by a human rights lawyer who is guided by the European Courts of human Rights, on all things.
But here’s a fact that you might not know, if you look up the definition of socialism in any dictionary there are 2 words that are excluded, one is freedom, the other is equality. And yet, those that proport to follow the socialist agenda constantly eulogise about these being the benefits of their ideology, the reality is different. Socialism is built on the premise, that a society and economy can only prosper, if it is controlled centrally by a small group of intellectually elite humans. Taxes are collected and spent on services many of us have never use or asked for, charities and other entities are funded without the consent of the population. Industry receive subsidies and the infrastructure of governance grows, each year the costs associated with this approach rise, there is no debate, no freedom of choice. These tax funded entities are protected from competition, in summary, all the tax paying population have to do is put up, shut up and pay up.
It is important to note, that socialism is founded on the belief that these elite humans have a greater understanding of how to spend your earnings than you do. That they understand what services you require, what education the population requires, and what industries we need. This is of course, an illusion.
The reality is that when you look beneath the surface, what you find is significantly different from what has been promised. There is layer on layer of legislation designed to control and constrain the populace, usually portrayed as a requirement to save the population from one disaster or another. You see, the humans that follow this ideology do believe, that they, and only them, are the saviours of humankind, and that without their interference all society is at risk of death or injury. So to stop the simpleton population from self-harm, it is necessary to have these controls, these regulations and laws, without them, we’d all perish.
But there is an even darker side to this, for their version of socialism to work it requires your total compliance, your obedience. The population has to accept that their leaders are in fact special, and that they have all of the answers, in their eyes any and all dissent must be quashed immediately. This is a dangerous path, history has shown that when members of a population start to question the socialist policies and leadership, their reaction has been to add further constraints, more controls. This response only inflames the situation, as the population becomes more frustrated and openly challenges this ideology, things escalate quickly. Those in power add harsher constraints which feeds the fire of dissent, it is at this boiling point that the transition occurs. What started off as an ideology of freedom and equality morph’s into a state of dictatorship, only those that adhere to the rules are accepted and treated equally, those that don’t become enemies of the state.
At first this passage is invisible, legislation and regulation is created to reduce any movement away from the societal framework. But, this is not enough, the populace must be compliant in all things. This is where the switch from socialism to fascism occurs, as Leon Trotsky said, “at the start of the revolution if you didn’t work you didn’t eat, 20 years later if you didn’t obey you didn’t eat”.
This is not fiction, you just have to look back through history to see the reality, wherever socialism has been embedded, it has always been to the detriment of freedom and choice. You are only equal if you adhere to the doctrine, in the USSR millions were imprisoned and tortured for no other reason than they didn’t agree, in China today, if you don’t stick to the Communist party line you are imprisoned, or even worse sent to be re-educated.
Remember, according to the leaders this is all being done on behalf of the people, it is being done for the safety and for the good of their society. They see themselves as the custodians of the working people, this is a myth. When you examine what is actually happening, those in control give themselves more power, more control, more wealth.
This leadership transition is dangerous, but there’s another problem. To satisfy the wants of a needy population taxes must be collected, those who have money and wealth must pay up. At first, the population cheers as the wealthy are stripped — until that is, the burden falls on ordinary workers, each of whom have been fooled into believing that someone else would pay. To fund these promises, taxes rise endlessly, costs rise beyond the economy’s ability to generate wealth. As productivity declines, competitiveness erodes, as the system starts to crumble debts spiral out of control, deficits, borrowing and money printing are the only things keeping this fantasy afloat. The fiscal timebomb has been set.
The UK today is a real-time socialist example, the only things to grow in the last 25 years are tax-funded government bodies, debts and deficits. Our populace is living way above its means, current living standards have been created artificially through excessive borrowing and money printing. The economy is stagnating, productivity levels and our ability to compete is declining, we are in a debt spiral heading downwards.
The disciples of socialism tell us to stay the course, we mustn’t deviate, everything will be ok in the end. Just close your eyes and hope for the best. The reality is different. Our population has been ensnared by dependency on this ideology, we have sacrificed our freedom for survival within a failing system. The non-contribution populace swells, expanding dependency on state support. Tax-funded workers increase in number, stretching public finances thin. This growth fuels resentment and deepens societal fractures. It thrives on illusion: promising freedom while delivering obedience, promising equality while enforcing dependency. It grows debt, deficits, and despair. It demands that you surrender your wealth, your independence, and ultimately your voice.
The truth is that Socialism is not about prosperity — it is about control and compliance. Leaders present themselves as saviours, but accumulate power and wealth. Services offered under socialism come with no competition or alternatives, costs rise but the individual’s voice is muted, trapped in a cycle of compliance. The non-tax funded workers are sacrificed to sustain the tax-funded workers and non‑contributors, the real price of socialism is frustration, poverty and no choice, just put up, shut up and pay up.
